April 24, 1926 – April 18, 2018
Dix O. Dishong, age 91, of Chagrin Falls passed away peacefully on April 18, 2018, after battling
Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Anne (Davis), and their five children,
Sally, Amy (Tom) Groneman, Jim (Karen – deceased), John (Margaret) and Molly (Tom) Coogan.
“Paw Paw” will be missed dearly by his 13 grandchildren Drew Miller; Alex, Ben, and Colin
Groneman; Lanie, Kailie and Joe Dishong; Everett, Amy and Kelly Dishong; and Jack, Patrick and
Maddie Coogan.

A native of Powhatan Point, OH, Dix was the valedictorian of his high school class and played
clarinet in the All-Ohio Boys Band. Upon graduation Dix enlisted in the Marine Corps serving from
1944 to 1946 during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart in connection with his participation
in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1952 during the Korean
Conflict and was stationed in Germany to assist in guarding the Berlin Wall. After active duty Dix
earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, from The Ohio State University and attended
Harvard Law School where notably his Civil Procedure professor was Watergate special prosecutor,
Archibald Cox.

Dix enjoyed a 34-year career with Ohio Bell and later AT&T starting as an Outside Representative and
progressing through a series of management and senior leadership positions of increasing responsibility culminating as Vice President of Regulatory Matters for Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. Upon
retirement in 1987, Dix and Anne relocated to Hilton Head, SC where they enjoyed many memorable
years with visits from family and friends. Dix pursued his love/hate relationship with golf and
utilized his lifelong passion for cars to find that “cream puff’ for himself and many others. In 2006
Dix and Anne returned to Chagrin Falls to be closer to family. As his nephew, Michael Davis , astutely
observed, “Despite all of his accomplishments, Dix was invariably understated in manner and always
exhibited a keen eye and discerning wit regarding the current sociological and political landscape.”

The family will receive friends at Chagrin Valley Country Club, 4700 SOM Center Road, Chagrin Falls, OH
44022 on Friday, May 18th at 2:00pm, to be immediately followed by a celebration of life service at
4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Dix to the Alzheimer’s Association
