Donald E. Long

DONALD E. LONG, age 98, of South Russell, Ohio. Beloved husband of the late Anneliese Long (deceased); loving father of Donald (Janice) Long, Sue Karnitis (Joe), and Jean Mackulin (Jim, deceased); dear grandfather of Claudia Depner (Jason), Robbie Locher (David), Samantha Hermann (Matt), Kate Stefaniuk (Tom), AJ Karnitis (Lindsey), Madelyn McElroy (Andrew), Eamonn O’Shea, and Sean O’Shea; and devoted great-grandfather of 14.

Don was born at home in Carey, Ohio. He was an only child and attended Carey High School. He was active in many student organizations and graduated in 1943. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Tiffin University in 1951. In 1953, he met and married Anneliese, his wife of 67 years. They moved to Chagrin Falls, Ohio in 1961 where they raised their 3 children. Don was a pioneer CPA in the State of Ohio for over 60 years. He was involved early on with the Medicare program, was president of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and was a widely known and respected expert in healthcare finance and accounting in the Cleveland area and throughout Ohio. He was treasurer of many charitable organizations including his church and the Boy Scouts. An avid aviation enthusiast, Don first flew at age 16. He earned his private pilot license from Horn Flying School in 1969 and flew until age 82. He especially loved flying family and friends to wherever they wanted to go. Don loved people from all walks of life and never met a man he didn’t like. To the very end of his life, he brought compassion, generosity, humor and a ready smile to those around him.

Friends will be received at ST. JOHN FUNERAL HOME, 16381 CHILLICOTHE RD. (RT 306), CHAGRIN FALLS, 44023 (2.5 MILES NORTH OF RT. 422), THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2023 FROM 10:30AM– 12:30 P.M. WITH SERVICE AT 12:30PM. BURIAL TO FOLLOW AT SOUTH RUSSELL VILLAGE CEMETERY.
