Eugene F. “Gene” Wetzel, age 88, of Twinsburg, passed peacefully at home, Friday, September 21. Beloved husband of 63 years to Catherine (nee Flaherty); loving father of Mary Ellen (John) Volpe, Theresa (Michael) Mallinak, Jennifer (Angelo) Colarusso, Theodore (Renee), Robert (Karen), Daniel (Angela), and Paula (Douglas) Thompson; cherished grandfather of Emily (Michael), Audre (Kevin), Jason (Katie), Monica (Kyle), DeAnna (Jeremy), Natalie, Julia, Benjamin, Anthony, Nicholas, Christina (Eric), Robert (Holly), Timothy, Matthew, Theodore, Samuel, Katharine, Colin, and Megan. Great-grandfather to Briella. Dear brother, uncle, and friend to many. Veteran, U.S. Army, Korea. Gene served the community through active involvement within his church family, Toastmasters International, the Knights of Columbus, the Bedford Chamber of Commerce, and as a principal of the W. J. Flaherty Insurance Company where his career spanned more than 45 years. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 28 at The St. John Funeral Home, 923 Broadway, Bedford. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 29 at St. Rita Church, Solon. (Please meet at church) Interment at All Saints Cemetery, Northfield. A luncheon will follow at Gambitta’s Party Center, Northfield Center. In place of flowers, please make a donation to support education (St. Rita School or John Carroll University), the arts (The Cleveland Museum of Art or The Cleveland Orchestra), the beauty of nature (the Cleveland Metroparks), or a charity of your choice.
