John Patrick Brahney, age 80, passed away peacefully in the morning hours of October 15th, 2026, surrounded by his loving nieces and nephews.
He was the beloved brother of the late Marilyn Zolata (Brahney) and brother in law of the late Andrew E. Zolata Jr.; brother of the late Irene (Neil) Purdy; and the cherished uncle of Andrew III (Darlene), Larry, Laura, Nancie (Scott) Sesny, Michael, and John (Dian). He was the dear son of the late Francis (“Frank”) and Regina (Walsh) Brahney, and a friend to all who knew him.
Born in Cleveland, OH, John grew up on Raeburn Avenue and later attended Tri C, earning a two year degree in business. He put that education to good use as co owner of State Beverage on Green Road. After the store was sold, he began a second career in the Coventry neighborhood of Cleveland Heights, where he took great pride in helping customers at the popular shop Passport to Peru.
John was a generous, kind, and humble man. He loved his family and friends, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Cleveland Indians — though not always in that order. He enjoyed movies, long walks through the Bedford Metroparks, and swimming and boating with his lifelong friends Tom and Cathy. Many of his happiest days were spent on the lakeshore at Beachland Park, celebrating holidays with friends.
Family gatherings were especially meaningful to John. Sunday dinners at Marilyn’s house were a tradition he never missed — always arriving as the first car in the driveway. He treasured holidays at the Sesny home, where he looked forward to Marilyn’s pasta and meatballs recipe lovingly carried on by Nancie.
Christmas held a special place in his heart. His nieces and nephews fondly remember him getting out of the car carrying big bags of presents. They couldn’t wait for him to arrive. His presence made the holiday feel complete.
John adored animals, including his cats Mitsy, Furball, and most recently his adopted Ginger. He also loved walking the Sesny family dogs — Dakota, Buckeye, and Brooks — who brought him great joy.
As a bachelor, he lived by a strict daily routine that served him well: dinner at 6 o’clock and a nightly bath at 8 sharp. These small rituals were part of what made him uniquely and endearingly John.
Above all, he cherished his family and took great pride in his Irish heritage.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 23rd at 10 AM at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Church, 340 Union Street, Bedford. Burial will follow at Bedford Cemetery.
